Precious

She dances at MacNasty's, the club squatting on the corner of Mercer and humiliation. Stage name: Precious. She carries a folded blade in the band at her left thigh — for the way the city sometimes treats girls like her as collateral.

The night Ichiban storms the club, she reads the room instantly. Knife out. When he silently signals her, she flees — grabbing Jade, the girl in jade lingerie at the back pole, by the wrist and dragging her backstage: "Backstage. Now."

Not a side character

Reginald's verdict: "The universe does not give side characters like her to men it plans on discarding after one act."

Later, in a bodega, she calls him "Daddy," kisses his cheek, and slips him a folded receipt with her number — signed with her real name, in looping script. Her real name is revealed to the reader in Book Two. Everyone in the club era knows her only as Precious.
